Cylus Music Q&A: Music Production, Coaching & Success
What is the biggest challenge artists face in music production?
The biggest challenge artists face is finding a solid music producer. Music production is complex, and beyond the technical side, finding a signature sound that sets an artist apart can be difficult. Many artists, especially those from smaller towns, struggle to connect with great producers. That’s why I learned to produce my own music, and now I see myself as both an artist and a producer. However, I also recognize the value of working with skilled producers who specialize in bringing out the best in an artist.
What inspired you to start offering music production services and coaching?
When I started, I didn’t have many resources. I had to teach myself everything, and now I want to give back to the community. While there are many online tutorials and courses, most focus solely on the technical side rather than the spiritual and expressive side of music production. But music is art, and the emotional connection matters just as much as the technical execution.
I’ve had only one mentor who truly emphasized the meditative and artistic expression of music production—Ryan from Pink Sky at IO Music Academy in Los Angeles. He introduced me to this perspective, and it completely changed how I approach music. Unlike many production courses that focus solely on the technical side, his teachings reinforced the idea that music isn’t just about tools and techniques—it’s about creativity, flow, and self-expression.
This approach has shaped how I teach and produce today. I’m also inspired by producers like Rick Rubin, who speaks about tapping into intuition and letting creativity unfold naturally, and by Julia Cameron’s work on spiritual creativity, which explores the deeper connection between art and the subconscious mind. These influences have helped me develop a production style that prioritizes artistic authenticity over perfection, allowing artists to create in a way that feels effortless and aligned with their vision.
What was your biggest struggle when learning music production?
My biggest struggle was deciding what kind of music to make… and honestly, I still don’t limit myself to one genre. In the beginning, the learning curve can feel overwhelming, but if you’re passionate about expressing yourself through music, you push through.
Another major challenge was mixing. Which is an entirely different skill set from producing. It took time to refine my ability to create balanced, professional mixes.
What do you wish you knew earlier that could have saved you time?
I wish I had known how to find good samples earlier. High-quality samples can make or break a track. Many producers waste time trying to mix sounds that don’t naturally fit together. Learning how to choose the right sounds and balance frequencies properly would have saved me countless hours.
Should DIY artists invest in coaching or mentorship?
Absolutely. Mentorship was the best investment I ever made.
Not everyone has access to in-person mentorship, but finding someone who has already walked the path you want to take can save years of trial and error. And don’t assume your mentor has to be a big-name producer—sometimes, the best guidance comes from someone just a few steps ahead of you. The right mentorship can accelerate your growth and help you refine your unique sound.
What makes your approach to music production different?
I focus on enhancing the artist’s vision rather than imposing my own. Some producers take full control over a track, but I believe in collaboration and flow. My role is to bring out the best in an artist without overproducing their work.
For example, on my recent release Playfriend with Sin Nikka, the song was already amazing before I touched it. My job wasn’t to change it but to elevate what was already there.
What key services do you offer?
To help artists and producers, I focus on three core services. Coaching helps artists unlock their creativity and refine their sound, giving them the confidence and tools to express themselves fully. Mixing takes raw tracks and transforms them into professional-quality mixes, ensuring that every element of a song shines. Custom Music Production involves working closely with artists to craft unique, high-quality productions tailored to their style, helping them bring their vision to life with clarity and precision.
What’s a common misconception about hiring a music producer?
Many artists believe they need a Grammy-winning producer to get high-quality music. That’s simply not true.
It’s like saying you need a Michelin-star chef to have a great meal—when in reality, some of the best food comes from local restaurants or home cooking. What truly matters is finding a producer who understands your vision and can help you bring it to life.
Have you helped clients achieve major wins?
Yes! I’ve helped clients release their first tracks on Spotify, some of which have gained some popularity. While that may not compare to mainstream artists, for an independent artist just starting out, it’s a huge milestone. Success is about building momentum, every release is a step forward.
What would you say to an artist hesitant about investing in professional production or coaching?
I’d say, take a discovery call with the producer first. See if their style resonates with you. Many producers offer trials or consultations, so test the waters before committing.
If it doesn’t feel right, don’t force it. Wait until the time is right or find someone else.
For me, investing in myself was the best decision I ever made, and when you find the right mentor or producer, it feels like unlocking a new level in your creative journey.
What kind of artists do you love working with?
I love working with artists who are different. Artists who push boundaries and think for themselves.
There are plenty of musicians making music just for clout or fame, but I’m drawn to those who create because they have something real to express. That’s what excites me.
If you had to sum up your mission as a producer and coach in one sentence, what would it be?
My mission is to raise awareness and collective consciousness through creativity and help artists and producers unblock their creativity so they can reconnect with their true selves through music.
