Why Trying Is Better Than Living with Regret (Especially in Music Production)
The Moment I Knew I Had to Bet on Myself
At 26, I had a stable corporate e-commerce job in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. I had financial security, a steady paycheck, and the illusion of a "safe" career path. But deep down? I knew I was meant for something else. Music had always been my passion, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that if I didn’t go all in on it, I would regret it for the rest of my life.
My biggest fear? Financial uncertainty. At the time, my music business had generated zero income—it was just a side hustle. I had no clue how to turn it into a full-time career, but I knew deep down that I could make it happen. And that fear of regret? That was far more terrifying than the risk of failing.
So I quit. I launched Cylus Music, and I never looked back.
Fear Will Keep You Stuck (Unless You Move Anyway)
For so many music producers and artists, fear is what keeps them stuck. Fear of failure. Fear of judgment. Fear that they won’t make enough money to survive. And let’s be real—you don’t have to go all in right away if you’re not ready. But if you feel that pull? That deep knowing that this is what you’re meant to do? You owe it to yourself to try.
Here’s the truth: Music production isn’t the most "stable" career if you’re only relying on streaming revenue. But you don’t have to. I make money from brand deals, partnerships, coaching, and custom music production services. There are so many ways to make music work for you if you treat it like a business—but the first step is actually deciding to take action.
The Best Time to Start Was Yesterday. The Next Best Time is Now.
I don’t regret not taking action sooner. I believe in divine timing—things unfold the way they’re supposed to. Looking back, it’s funny how much I stressed about things that ended up working themselves out. If you’re sitting on the fence, overthinking everything, trust me—things have a way of aligning when you commit.
The worst thing you can do is let fear of the unknown stop you from trying.
The Biggest Lessons I’ve Learned From Betting on Myself
How to Sell My Skills & Market Myself – No one is going to magically "discover" you. You have to put yourself out there, show your work, and treat your music like a business.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others – There will always be other amazing producers out there. But comparison is a trap—trusting in my own skills, my unique approach, and what I have to offer is what allowed me to grow.
Confidence Comes From Action – I know I’m an amazing producer now, but I didn’t always feel that way. The only way to build confidence is to prove to yourself that you can do it.
The Worst That Could Happen? You Learn.
I used to think the worst-case scenario was that I’d go broke and homeless. But honestly? I’d rather go broke pursuing something I love than stay in a job that drains me mentally, spiritually, and intellectually.
Since starting Cylus Music, I’ve grown in ways I never imagined. I don’t regret it for a second. And if you feel that same pull, that same voice in the back of your mind telling you to go for it? Listen to it.
Regret lasts a lifetime. Fear is temporary. Bet on yourself.
